Buitengewoon triest nieuws.

On Rachelle's behalf, please find her eulogy below:
Today is a day of great sadness as I am bidding farewell to my best friend, my beloved husband, and to an absolutely amazing father to my heart, Stella Jolie, who had to celebrate her 1st birthday without her dada.
Stephan was and always will be the man with the biggest heart I have ever known. He would do anything to make me and our little one happy. Let me tell you a story.
Soccer was a great love in his life. As a kid he played it, watched it, ate it and drank it. So when he couldn’t play soccer anymore, he took coaching classes in his native Netherlands.. It gave him great satisfaction to train kids and teach them all he knew about his passion. After high school he went to College, to study Human Resources, but when he got a chance to switch to Sports Economy, the choice was made. He went on to obtain his professional scouting papers and thus a dream everybody has became reality. He earned a living with his hobby: soccer.
He moved to Ireland where a friend of his worked for a club called Bohemians. And Ireland was another love of his; the slow paced, mellow way of life fit his personality. He had a great time performing scouting work for them until he met me; an American tourist in Ireland. We connected and when I made it clear I didn’t want to live in Ireland, he did not hesitate.
A week later he called me and said he had resigned from his club to be able to move to wherever I wanted to go. That was Stephan; always thinking about those he cared about first and set his own happiness aside.
So we ended up in Los Angeles, and after the dust settled, he went to work for a project he fully believed in: UCLA Soccer. Giving talented kids a chance to escape and get a new start in life. He didn’t believe in a promised land, but he fully believed everybody deserved a better life and he was proud to be a tiny part of that. Late last year he got an offer I told him was too good to turn down, scouting for Sparta, a club in his native Holland.
Stephan thought about it for about an hour, then picked up the phone, called them back and turned it down. The reason? He would have to rip his family away from their comfort zone and he could not muster that thought.
That was my husband. Sacrificing his dreams and happiness in favor of his family's wellbeing.
I am saddened beyond words I have never been given the chance to repay that level of commitment, love and compassion, and even sadder Stella’s dada won’t be able to teach her to ride a bike, tie her shoe laces or help her with her home work. He will never be able to read the poems he wrote to her and were published just a few weeks ago.
My love, my baby, farewell. I will always miss you, but know you will always be loved by me and your little Star. Close your beautiful eyes now and remember our wedding song:
“We said we'd walk together baby come what may.
That come the twilight should we lose our way.
If as we're walking, a hand should slip free,
I'll wait for you
and should I fall behind, wait for me”.
